Alternative text

All content images used in this site include descriptive alternative text or 'ALT' text. If an image is used for decorative purposes, the text attribute for the image is left empty. This is in line with accepted best practice.

Colour

Foreground and background colours on this site have been selected to provide a proper level of contrast for ease of reading.

Throughout the site, colour is never used as a sole means to convey information.

Downloads

Most documents on this website are PDFs (portable document format). The advantage of a PDF is that it will always be presented consistently. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open PDF files, and this can be downloaded free. This software now includes screen-reading functionality.

Adobe also has a free online conversion tool for PDFs so people who have problems reading PDFs can convert them so that they appear as normal web pages or plain text.

There are two ways to download PDFs:

  • Right click on the PDF link, select 'Save Target As' from the pop-up menu and download the PDF to your hard disk.

  • Open the PDF directly from the link, then click on the 'Save' icon on the Acrobat toolbar, which will then save the PDF file to your hard disk.

Logical tab order

It is possible to move around the site using only the 'Tab' key on your keyboard. The 'Tab' key jumps between all hyperlinks or form controls on a page in a logical order.

Options for Mac users

There are full instructions on making use of the various versions of the Macintosh operating system's accessibility features. These include resizing text, text-to-speech function and keyboard alternatives to mouse functions. For more information, visit the accessibility section on Apple's website.

Options for Windows users

Windows provides a wide range of features that can improve accessibility. These can be turned on by clicking on the 'Start' logo (at the bottom left of the screen), then selecting 'Control Panel'. You can then choose 'Accessibility Options'.
